After routine cataract surgery, most people can fly home within days. The rule is simple: fly after your check-up, and never while there is a gas bubble in the eye. If you come to Antalya for the operation, the next question is how many days to stay. That depends mainly on whether one eye or both are treated.

Can you fly after cataract surgery?
Usually yes. Routine cataract surgery leaves no gas bubble inside the eye, so the drop in cabin pressure has nothing to act on. For this reason, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) sees no risk in flying right after routine cataract surgery.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is more cautious. In its guidance for health professionals, it advises waiting one week before flying after any operation inside the eye. This is a general rule for eye operations, not a finding about cataract surgery itself.
The firm exception is gas inside the eye. Cataract surgery is sometimes combined with retinal surgery that leaves a gas bubble in the eye. The bubble expands as cabin pressure falls, so you must not fly until the gas has gone. The CAA suggests about 2 weeks for SF6 gas and 6 weeks for C3F8 gas.
On the plane, keep the drops, their schedule and the prescription in your carry-on bag. Cabin air is dry, so use lubricating drops if they were recommended, and do not rub the eye. If you cross time zones, ask beforehand how to schedule the drops.

Full recovery usually takes 4–6 weeks, and in most people healing is complete by 8 weeks. A gritty or tired feeling in the first days is common. Pain, redness or blurring that keeps getting worse is not normal and needs to be seen by an eye doctor the same day.
How long do you use eye drops after cataract surgery?
Most people use drops for about 4 weeks. The usual schedule includes a steroid drop, which calms inflammation, often together with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drop (NSAID). European guidance finds the two together more effective than either one alone. The combination helps prevent inflammation and swelling of the macula, the center of the retina. It is advised especially for people with diabetes.
Some practical points:
- Wash your hands first, and do not let the bottle tip touch the eye.
- Leave a few minutes between two different drops.
- Take enough drops home for the whole course.
- Do not stop the steroid drops early without advice, as the inflammation can flare up again.

How long should you stay in Antalya after cataract surgery?
Plan for an examination with measurements before surgery and a check-up after it, before you fly. UK guidance no longer requires a routine check on the day after uncomplicated surgery. European guidance allows the first follow-up visit to wait up to 2 weeks. Before a flight home, though, a check is sensible. Example schedules:

Studies have compared surgery on both eyes on the same day with surgery on separate days. They have not looked specifically at very short gaps of one or two days between the eyes, so the gap is decided individually. Can both eyes be operated on during one trip?
Operating on both eyes in one session halves the number of operation days and trips. A 2022 Cochrane review, which pooled the results of many studies, found no sign of more infections with same-day surgery. There was 1 case in 14,076 with same-day surgery, compared with 55 in 556,246 with surgery on separate days. Vision results were similar. European and UK guidance consider same-day surgery an option for people whose eyes have no conditions that raise the risk of complications.
For travelers, the trade-offs are practical:
- The second lens cannot be adjusted to the result in the first eye. This matters most with premium lenses.
- Both eyes recover at the same time, so a companion for the first days is worth considering.
- If the first eye has a complication, the second operation is postponed.

What happens after you return home?
You do not need to stay until healing is complete. UK guidance recommends written information for every patient. It should cover the operation and the lens, the drops, the restrictions, the warning signs and how to reach the practice. European guidance notes that after uncomplicated surgery, remote monitoring may replace some early examinations. Its reliability is still being assessed.
