Research and Publications of Prof. Dr. Elif Betül Türkoğlu

This page lists the publications of Prof. Dr. Elif Betül Türkoğlu, Professor of Ophthalmology and ocular oncologist in Antalya. Most of the work was done in Türkiye, above all during her academic career at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine. It reflects questions that arise in everyday clinical practice: how to recognize an eye tumor, how to treat it while protecting sight, and what influences the results of eye surgery.

Research focus

The largest group of papers concerns eye tumors and the conditions that imitate them. Prof. Türkoğlu was first author of a study of photodynamic therapy as the primary treatment for small choroidal melanoma (Retina, 2019), one of five papers she co-authored between 2016 and 2021 with Dr. Carol L. Shields, with whom she worked as a research fellow at the Wills Eye Hospital Ocular Oncology Service in Philadelphia (2015–2016). Later studies followed, over several years, patients who received photodynamic therapy after CyberKnife radiotherapy for uveal melanoma or as treatment for benign tumors such as choroidal hemangioma.

A second theme is imaging. Several papers show how optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other scans help to tell a tumor from a harmless look-alike — for example a congenital spot next to a retinoblastoma in a child, or leukemic infiltration of the iris. The third theme is surgical outcomes, especially in cataract surgery. Her specialty thesis examined cataract surgery in eyes that had already undergone vitrectomy; later papers cover YAG laser capsulotomy in patients with diabetes and cataract surgery in rare conditions, and congress presentations describe sutureless scleral fixation of intraocular lenses (see complex cataract surgery). Papers on retina, cornea and ocular surface disease, glaucoma and uveitis reflect her broad clinical work at a university hospital.

How to read the list

• Grouping. Publications are grouped by topic and listed from newest to oldest within each group.
• Role. The label after each entry shows her position among the authors. First author usually means she led the work and wrote the paper; senior author (the last position) usually means she supervised it; co-author means she contributed as a member of the team; sole author means she wrote it alone.
• Type of paper. Some entries are clinical studies of groups of patients; others are case reports or image reports describing a single patient with an unusual finding. Both have their place, but studies of many patients carry more weight as evidence.
