What does uveal melanoma treatment cost?

The cost of treating uveal melanoma depends mainly on the method chosen. Plaque brachytherapy is the most common eye-sparing treatment for uveal melanoma. Its cost covers two short operations: one to stitch a small radioactive plaque onto the eye, and one to remove it several days later. It also covers planning with the radiation oncology and medical physics teams. Your stay must cover the days the plaque is in place.

Proton and stereotactic radiotherapy are given only at specialized centers, which set their own prices. Photodynamic therapy is an outpatient laser treatment, but sessions may need to be repeated. What does eye tumor surgery cost?

The cost of eye tumor surgery depends on the operation. A small excision on the eye surface under local anesthesia is very different from orbital surgery or removal of the eye under general anesthesia. For an orbital tumor, the first question is whether a biopsy is enough or the whole tumor must be removed. The implant, pathology, the hospital stay, any eyelid reconstruction, a later artificial eye and any radiotherapy or drug treatment afterward all affect the total.

What does retinoblastoma treatment cost?

For children with retinoblastoma, the route of treatment and the number of sessions determine the cost. Intra-arterial chemotherapy delivers the drug through the artery that supplies the eye. It is given together with an interventional radiology team and is usually repeated several times, a few weeks apart. Injections into the eye continue until the tumor seeds (small clumps of tumor cells floating inside the eye) respond. Children also need regular examinations under anesthesia: after treatment, often every 6–8 weeks until about age 3.

What do enucleation and an artificial eye cost?

If an eye has to be removed (enucleation), a custom artificial eye is fitted about 4–8 weeks after surgery. That may mean a second trip, or a fitting near home with an ocularist, a specialist who makes artificial eyes. The prosthesis needs regular polishing. What do follow-up, hospital and travel add?

For uveal melanoma, the 2026 guidelines of the US National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommend liver imaging every 3–12 months, depending on the tumor's risk. Why can a fixed price only be given after your records are reviewed?

Because the treatment plan determines the price. A melanoma inside the eye, a tumor on the eye surface, an eyelid cancer and retinoblastoma in a child are treated in completely different ways. Even within one diagnosis the plan can differ. A small choroidal melanoma may suit laser treatment, a medium-sized one usually needs radiation, and a very large one may require removal of the eye.
